This past weekend, I joined community members and elders of the native Tongva tribe which has resided in the San Fernando Valley since before the founding of this country to learn about and celebrate the natural history and beauty that abounds in our own backyard.
Every year in the lead up to Earth Day, the Chatsworth community hosts a gathering at the Chatsworth Nature Preserve to teach residents young and old about the local ecology and the importance of preserving this unique natural treasure. The reverence this community holds for our natural surroundings is unique and was on full display Saturday.
During the event, I had the honor of participating in a traditional Tongvan invocation which required removing my shoes so as to better connect with the Earth. The event also featured tree plantings and guided nature hikes.
I would like to thank everyone who made this event possible. It is events like this that make our corner of Los Angeles unlike any other.
